# Setting up a payment location

> Register each POS or self-checkout as a payment location. Prerequisite for check-in and payments.

Manage payment locations to allow check-in and payments at the checkout

## Introduction

A **payment location** is an abstraction of a location that permits customer check-in (for example, identify by scanning the loyalty card) and allows for transactional (purchase) flow to be completed (e.g., funds captured). Examples of payment locations:

* POS
* SelfCheckout machine to be used after basket offload process is performed

Regardless of what it represents and what check-in option is used, having a registered payment location is a prerequisite for the POS system to enable the customer to be checked in at that particular POS and process payments.

## Recommendations

* A payment location is a unique identifier of a POS system within the Lobyco payment service
* Usually, we recommend a payment location identifier to be composed based on store id and pos id: `'{storeId}_{posId}'`

## Usage

The payment location registration should be done once using a REST API call. This registers in the Lobyco system a QR code in a specific store, that is assigned to a checkout machine (POS or SelfCheckout). When customers scan this QR code, the Lobyco system manages the promotional benefits based on that location.

[POST /v1/payment-locations/\{paymentLocation}/setup](/api-reference/payments/payment-coordinator/post-v1-payment-locations-paymentlocation-setup)

The body of the request needs to contain the following parameters:

* The QR code assigned to the payment location
* The store identifier
* Allow or not to re-assign the QR code if it's already assigned to another payment location
* Payment location type (POS, SelfCheckout)
