# Create an audience

> Make a list of customers from a file, or let a campaign fill one from a segment, so offers, bonuses, games and messages can target it.

An audience is a saved list of customers that offers, bonuses, games, challenges and messages can target. This page shows how to make one from a file of customer IDs, and how to let a campaign fill one from a segment.

## Start a new audience

1. Go to **Segmentation** → **Audiences**. The list opens on the **Active** tab.
2. Select **Create audience**.

The form that opens is called **Create new audience**. It has two parts, **Audience details** and **Member list**.

## Fill in the audience details

| Field | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Name** | Names the audience. You look for this name when you pick the audience in an offer or a message. Two active audiences can't have the same name. If the name is taken, nothing is saved. Pick a different name. |
| **Source** | Filled in for you. It reads **Manual** for an audience you make on this page, and **CST** for one you make from a campaign. |
| **Destination(s)** | Sets which activities can use the audience. Pick one or more, or pick **Select all** to let every activity use it. |
| **Description** | Optional. Says what the audience is for. |

An activity only lists the audiences that have its destination, or that are set to **Select all**. The destinations you see depend on what your setup uses. These are the common ones:

| Destination | Lets this activity use the audience |
| - | - |
| **Promotion** | Offers |
| **BonusCalculation** | Bonuses |
| **Game** | Games |
| **Challenges** | Challenges |
| **Push**, **Feed**, **Banner**, **Prompt** | The channel with the same name |

## Add the customers

Under **Member list**, add a .csv file of customer IDs. Drag it onto the box, or choose **select file**.

Set the file out like this:

* One customer ID per row, in the first column.
* A heading row is fine if it's called `MemberId` or `CustomerId`.
* The file can be up to 30 MB.

```csv theme={"system"}
MemberId
100234
100871
101552
```

Once the file is in, **Total entries** shows how many IDs it found. To use a different file, select **Change file**.

You can also leave **Member list** empty and let a campaign fill the audience instead. [Fill an audience from a campaign](#fill-an-audience-from-a-campaign) shows how.

## Save as draft or publish

| Button | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Save as draft** | Keeps the audience on the **Draft** tab. Activities can't pick it yet. |
| **Publish** | Makes the audience active. It moves to the **Active** tab, and activities with its destination can pick it. |

Both stay greyed out until the audience has a **Name** and at least one **Destination(s)**. After you save, you go back to the list, on the tab the audience is now on. To leave without saving, select **Cancel**.

You can't delete an audience once it's published. You can only disable it. So if you're not sure yet, save it as a draft first. [Edit, snapshot or disable an audience](/business-documentation/audiences-and-data/edit-snapshot-or-disable-an-audience) covers both.

## Fill an audience from a campaign

A campaign can put a segment's customers into an audience every time it runs. This is how you get an audience from rules, such as everyone who spent more than 500 last month. First save the segment, as [Create a segment](/business-documentation/audiences-and-data/create-a-segment) shows. Then, in the campaign:

1. Add a **Member segment** block with your segment.
2. Connect a **Channel** block after it, and double-click it to open *Configure channel*.
3. Under **Location**, pick **Audience**.
4. Select **Select from list** to pick an audience, or **Create new audience** to make one. A new one has no file, because the campaign fills it. It's published as soon as you create it.
5. Save the block, then save the campaign.

Each run replaces everyone in the audience with the segment's customers at that moment. If you pick an audience that already has customers, the portal warns you that its list will be lost when the campaign runs.

[Block reference](/business-documentation/campaigns/orchestration-canvas/block-reference#channel) covers the Channel block, and [Schedule and run a campaign](/business-documentation/campaigns/schedule-and-run-a-campaign) covers when it runs.

## Use the audience in an activity

In an offer, bonus, game, challenge or message, go to where you choose who it's for. Choose **Select Audience**, then select **Select from list** and pick your audience. Only active audiences with that activity's destination, or with **Select all**, show up.

**Select Snapshots** picks a snapshot instead. A snapshot is a copy of the audience at one moment, so its customers don't change after that. [Edit, snapshot or disable an audience](/business-documentation/audiences-and-data/edit-snapshot-or-disable-an-audience) shows how to take one.

You can also make an audience right there with **Create new audience**. It opens the same form, with the activity's destination already picked. It's published as soon as you select **Create**, so it needs a file.

## Troubleshooting

> **Why does the upload say 'File is empty'?**
>
> Lobyco found no customer IDs in the file. Put the IDs in the first column, one per row, and save the file as .csv.

> **Why is the audience's Size smaller than Total entries?**
>
> **Total entries** counts every row in the file. When the audience is saved, Lobyco keeps each customer ID only once. So if an ID appears twice in the file, **Size** comes out lower.
