# Design a game

> Design the gameplay your customers play in Gameplay design, from a template to a published gameplay with a link for your game in a campaign.

This page helps you design the gameplay in **Gameplay design**. The gameplay is what your customers play. At the end, you copy its **Live URL** into your game in a campaign. Gameplay design's own screens call the gameplay a game.

## Open the game type

1. Open **Toolbox** → **Gameplay design**. If you don't see it, ask your administrator for access.
2. Select the card for the game type you want. [Game types](/business-documentation/activities/games/types-of-games) lists them all.

The type's list opens on **Active**. **Inactive** holds drafts, and gameplays that haven't started or have ended. **Templates** holds the gameplays marked as templates.

Under the heading Games types are 17 cards, each with an icon, the type's name and a badge for its group. Wheels of fortune, Scratchcard, Spin the bottle, Rock paper scissors, Slot machine, Roll the dice, Roulette and Tap to reveal carry a purple LUCK badge. Memory game, Drop game, Shoot it, Slice it, Match matrix and Bounce battle carry a blue SKILL badge. Quiz, Calendar and Guess the image carry a coral KNOWLEDGE badge. Below the cards is the Latest games list, with a Search for game field and the columns Name, Date, Type and Status. Its first three rows are Wheels of fortune test gameplays, one Expired and two Draft, each showing the days left in its period, its creation date, and Copy, Edit and Delete buttons.](https://mintcdn.com/lobyco-4c9fb3ad/rG971_5ZfS49bcjM/images/games-05-gameplay-design-start-page.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=rG971_5ZfS49bcjM\&q=85\&s=a64b5f982f3f38605de0227f523e58c1)

## Start from a template

Every new gameplay is a copy of a template.

1. Select **Create new**.
2. Enter a **Game name**.
3. Under **Templates**, tick the one to copy. Select **preview** under a template to try it in a new tab.
4. Select **Save**.

Your new gameplay opens on its **Game Setting** page.

To start from one of your own gameplays instead, select **Copy** on its row in the list. Give the copy a name and select **Save**.

The General panel says You are about to create a new game, with Game Type greyed out and locked on Wheels of fortune, and Game name empty. Below it, the Templates panel asks you to select a template for your game and shows three template cards: Content Template - Basic Winner Pool Wheel of Fortune (6 fields), Content Template - Basic Instant Win Wheel of Fortune (8 fields) and Content Template - Basic Winner Pool Wheel of Fortune (8 fields). Each card has a picture area, a placeholder image on these three, an empty tick box in its top-right corner, and a preview link under its name. The templates are on their last page, 21 – 23 of 23. At the bottom are Cancel, and Save, which is greyed out.](https://mintcdn.com/lobyco-4c9fb3ad/rG971_5ZfS49bcjM/images/games-06-create-new-from-template.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=rG971_5ZfS49bcjM\&q=85\&s=90bc3c92597e4487e3c0e903965684a7)

## Design the gameplay in the Gameplay Editor

At the top of **Game Setting**, select **Go to Gameplay Editor**. The editor opens in a new browser tab. That's where you change how the gameplay looks and what it says, such as a quiz's questions.

Gameplay design opens a **Refresh** dialog at the same time. Select **Refresh** there when you've finished, and customers see your changes straight away. Otherwise they update on their own within 24 hours. You can also refresh from the top of **Game Setting**, once every 5 minutes at most.

The General panel shows Game Type locked on Wheels of fortune and Game name New game. The Location panel has Chain(s) and Store(s) dropdowns with OR between them, both empty, and a note that the gameplay can be limited to chains or stores, but not both. The Template options panel has the switch Use this game as template in the account!, which is off. The Game Period panel warns that game dates are not saved while the gameplay is a draft, and has Active from and Active to empty, with Activation time and De-action time at 00:00. The Live URL panel shows the Game URL, blurred here, with a Copy URL button. At the bottom are Cancel, Save as draft, and Publish, which is greyed out.](https://mintcdn.com/lobyco-4c9fb3ad/rG971_5ZfS49bcjM/images/games-07-game-setting-page.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=rG971_5ZfS49bcjM\&q=85\&s=54c40c3f9fac0333a60c92d5628bcd28)

## Show each winner the right reward

Skip this if your game has one reward, or if it's a [lottery game](/business-documentation/activities/games/create-a-game#set-how-the-game-plays). In a lottery game, Lobyco picks the winners after the game ends, so no reward is chosen while the customer plays.

When a customer wins a game with several rewards, Lobyco picks one of them at random and sends the gameplay its reward ID. A reward with more items left is more likely to be picked, and you can't set the split yourself. [Create a game](/business-documentation/activities/games/create-a-game#choose-the-rewards) explains how.

The gameplay can only tell which reward the customer won from that reward ID. So it needs a winning screen for each reward, and each screen has to show only to the winners of that reward. If the gameplay has only one winning screen, every winner sees the same reward on it, even when they won a different one.

Find each reward ID in the **Id** column of the reward's table on the game's **Reward settings** tab. Bonus and custom rewards get their ID when you save the game. Give the IDs to whoever designs the gameplay in the Gameplay Editor, and ask them to show each winning screen to the winners of that reward.

To check it worked, play the live game until you've won each reward once, and see that every win shows the matching screen. Each win uses up one item of that reward.

## Set the location and template options

Both are optional.

* In the **Location** panel, **Chain(s)** or **Store(s)** saves chains or stores with the gameplay. Pick one or the other. It doesn't limit who can play. You choose who can play on the game's **Segmentation** tab, in its campaign.
* In the **Template options** panel, **Use this game as template in the account!** offers this gameplay as a template for new gameplays of its type. It then shows on the type's **Templates** tab. When you turn it on, a **Template Identifier Image** field appears. That's the picture on the template's card. It's required, and you upload a .jpg, .jpeg or .png file.

## Set the game period

Set **Active from** and **Activation time** for when the gameplay starts. Set **Active to** and **De-action time** for when it stops, after the start. All four are required to publish. If you save a draft, the dates aren't kept, so fill them in again before you publish.

Make the period at least as long as your game in the campaign. It has to start no later than the game and end no earlier. Otherwise the game shows a red bar about its dates in its campaign.

## Publish the gameplay

Select **Publish**. It stays greyed out until the dates are filled in, and the **Template Identifier Image** too if you made it a template. Until you publish, **Save as draft** keeps your changes without the dates.

After you publish, the button reads **Save**. In the type's list, the gameplay shows as **Scheduled** until its start, then **Active**, then **Expired**. A published gameplay can't go back to being a draft.

Publishing doesn't put anything in the app. Customers only reach the gameplay through a game in a campaign, once that game is live.

## Link the gameplay to your game

1. In the type's list, select **Edit** on your gameplay.
2. Under **Live URL**, select **Copy URL**.
3. In **Campaigns**, open the game in its campaign, or add a game.
4. On its **Activity behaviour** tab, paste the link into **Game URL**.

You'll know the two match when the game saves with no red bar about its URL. [Create a game](/business-documentation/activities/games/create-a-game) takes you through the rest of that form.

## Change, copy or delete a gameplay

Each row in a type's list has three buttons.

| Button | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Edit** | Opens **Game Setting** again. Select **Save** to keep new dates or a new location. To change how it looks, use the Gameplay Editor, then select **Refresh**. |
| **Copy** | Makes a new gameplay from this one, with a name you give it. |
| **Delete** | Deletes the gameplay after you confirm in the **Game deletion** dialog. It can't be restored. |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Customers can't play a game whose gameplay you've deleted. Before you delete a gameplay, check that no game still uses it. A game uses it when its **Game URL** matches the gameplay's **Live URL**.

## Troubleshooting

> **Why is Save greyed out when I create a gameplay?**
>
> Enter a **Game name** that isn't only spaces, and tick one of the **Templates**.

> **Why don't my changes from the Gameplay Editor show?**
>
> Select **Refresh** at the top of **Game Setting**. Without it, changes take up to 24 hours to reach customers.

> **Why does my game say its dates don't match the gameplay?**
>
> The gameplay's period is shorter than the game's dates in its campaign. Select **Edit** on the gameplay, move **Active from** earlier or **Active to** later, and select **Save**.
