# Edit or disable a challenge

> What you can still change once a challenge is live, how to stop one, and how to copy it or save it as a template.

This page helps you change a challenge after you've created it. It also shows you how to stop, delete or copy a challenge, and how to save one as a template.

## What you can change, and when

To change a challenge, open it from its row in the campaign's activity list. You can also open it from its block on the [orchestration canvas](/business-documentation/campaigns/orchestration-canvas). The row's **⋯** menu has the other actions on this page too. **Refresh activity** in that menu reloads the challenge, so its **Status** and alerts are up to date.

Your changes apply as soon as you save them. From then on, purchases and refunds are counted under the new rules. That includes a refund for a purchase made before your change.

Purchases that were already counted aren't counted again. Each customer's open card keeps the progress it has, and new purchases add to it under the new rules. For example, on a **Multiple purchase** challenge, a customer with 3 of 5 on their card needs 5 more if you change the target to 8. If you lower a target below the progress a card already has, the card completes with the customer's next counted purchase, not when you save.

| Status | What you can change |
| - | - |
| **Draft** | Everything. |
| **Scheduled** | Everything except **Select reward types** and **Reward issuance behaviour**. **Select reward types** still looks editable, but once the challenge is published, saving a change to it fails. |
| **Active** | Everything except **Challenge type**, **Select reward types** and **Reward issuance behaviour**. You can't switch a running challenge between standard and tiered, or between a standard reward and a lottery. |
| **Expired** | Nothing. The form is read-only. |

The form is also read-only once the challenge's campaign has ended, or when you open the challenge from **Toolbox → Challenges** instead of from its campaign.

> [!TIP]
>
> Avoid changing **Accumulation** or the [earn rules](/business-documentation/activities/challenges/accumulation-types) on an active challenge. On a tiered challenge, avoid changing tier targets, deleting a tier or changing a tier's rewards too.
>
> Customers have already been told what to do, and they've started collecting toward the goal. If you change the rules, their later purchases are counted against a goal they weren't shown.

If you do change the goal, update **Details text** and **Challenge progress and reward label** on **Challenge layout** too. Customers keep reading the old goal there until you do.

## Stop a challenge

When you disable a scheduled or active challenge, it's taken away from customers straight away.

1. Open the **⋯** menu on the challenge's row and select **Disable**. Or select **Unpublish** at the bottom of the challenge form.
2. Select **Unpublish** to confirm.

The challenge goes back to **Draft**. Customers keep any coupons and bonuses they've already received. They also keep the progress on their open cards, and those cards are still there when you publish the challenge again. While it's a draft, purchases don't count toward it, and they aren't added later if you publish it again. A card of a triggered challenge still expires after its **Validity period of challenge**, which you set on **Activity details**.

Disabling doesn't take back anything customers already have. To withdraw coupons they received from a challenge, stop the offer behind the coupon reward. A coupon only shows for the customer while its offer is published and inside its dates. That takes it away from every customer who holds it. Bonuses can't be taken back.

On a tiered challenge that issues only the highest tier, customers who reached the top tier already got their reward. Customers who reached only a lower tier get theirs in the overnight run after the challenge ends, and that run only settles challenges that are published at the time. If you disable the challenge and publish it again before its end date, nothing is lost. If it's still disabled when it ends, those customers get nothing, and the run doesn't come back for them. Moving the **End date** into the future and publishing again settles them after the new end date instead. A challenge that isn't settled within 30 days of its end date isn't settled later. See [Reward issuance behaviour](/business-documentation/activities/challenges/create-a-challenge#tiered-challenges).

> [!WARNING]
>
> If a lottery challenge is still disabled when its end date passes, you can't draw its winners. A draw exists only for a published challenge that has ended, and once the end date has passed you can't publish the challenge again until you move its **End date** into the future. To recover one while its campaign is still running, see [Why is Draw winners greyed out?](/business-documentation/activities/challenges/draw-lottery-winners#why-is-draw-winners-greyed-out).

## Delete a draft

You can only delete a draft. To delete a live challenge, disable it first. Deleting can't be undone.

1. Open the **⋯** menu on the challenge's row and select **Delete**. Or select **Delete** at the bottom of the challenge form.
2. Select **Delete** again to confirm.

The challenge disappears from the campaign's activity list.

## Duplicate a challenge

To start a new challenge from one you already have, make a copy. You can copy any challenge that hasn't ended, as long as you can still edit its campaign.

1. Open the **⋯** menu on the challenge's row and select **Duplicate as draft**.
2. Select **Duplicate as draft** again to confirm.

The copy is a new draft in the same campaign, named *Copy of* the original. It keeps everything else, including the dates, rules, rewards and segments. Change what you need to before you publish it.

The row also offers **Duplicate as draft** on an expired challenge, but the copy fails. That's because the copy keeps the original's dates, and those have already passed.

## Save as template

You can save a challenge as a template, and then use it as the starting point for new challenges. Select **Save as template** in the **⋯** menu on the challenge's row in the campaign's activity list, which always offers it. Or select it in the **▾** menu beside **Save** at the bottom of the form, which offers it once you've saved the challenge, including one you open as a block on the orchestration canvas.

You'll know it worked when the row's **⋯** menu shows **Remove from templates**. The form also shows a **Remove from templates** button where the **▾** was.

A challenge you create from a template starts as a draft named *Copy of* the original. It takes the campaign's dates. It keeps the chains or stores and the segments the original targeted, but its **Redemption expire date** is cleared. [Reuse with templates](/business-documentation/campaigns/reuse-with-templates) walks you through the whole flow.
